A lot of the fandom are now mostly shifting the blame to DW for restraining them but it's not like there aren't other Voltron proprietaries out there affecting their vision.
VOLTRON GAY FUCKING SHIT FULL
Honestly I feel horrible for the showrunners now cuz of all the great piles of shit they've had to deal with from the fandom over these couple years, taking the brunt of the heat every time something goes wrong despite not having full control over the creative direction. Sorry (not sorry) for the harsh tone but it's exhausting to fight again and again to be treated properly. We are not only allowed, we owe it to ourselves. We are allowed to complain and show them the mistakes they make and ask for better. We are customers, we watch their show, we buy their stuff, etc. Most reviews even the one who liked S8 share this view. All this was a PR stunt from DreamWorks in hopes to get some good press and sell merchandise. Husbands of the hero of the show are not interchangeable. The leaks showed that the random was first put in the background and then replaced the first random they intended to stick Shiro with. When you know about the process that ended with that wedding it makes it even worse. It's known that this was added last minute at the beginning of september. It's even worse when in the previous scene Shiro says he's excited to keep exploring and travelling and the reason he broke up with Adam was because he didn't want to settle down (I won't even go into details about the almost complete erasure of his relationship with Keith the season after he's revealed as gay, the underlying homophobia behind is off the chart). Also the implication that he finally found happiness by settling down is reducing his character to his gayness, the gay can only find fulfilment by being with a guy. Finally the text accompanying this wedding is hard to reconcile with the Shiro we love, yes he deserved a break but not a retirement from a war that's over because he won it and before he's even 30.

If you watched without subtitles you can't even know his name. How hard could it have been to give them even ONE interaction? You shouldn't have to wonder "who is this guy?". The guy Shiro marries is the most perfect example of what a gay token is, he exists only as a way to say that the show has a lgbtq element. It was done so poorly, it's badly animated. Especially when the guy is a random with many faces and wrongfully named as shiro's dead ex boyfriend IN THE WEDDING SHOT. Yes it is better than nothing but since when is this a good standard? Shiro (and queer characters) deserved as much a romance than hetero couples like Allura and Lance, that's what it's all about. I think you don't get how heartwrenching it is for lgbtq people to criticize that wedding, a lot of children and teens and adults straight or gay or whatever will see it and that's good. shouldn't strive for equality because some people are opposed to it? You can use this sentence and adapt it to any fights about equality. Queer stories need to be told and not as 5 seconds afterthought. We deserve good characters with good stories, the whole package deal.

We are done settling for less, we deserve fully fleshed romance, we deserve representation done well and thoughtful just like all the hetero couples present everywhere in media.

The fundamental problem with the way you present things is that because there are a bunch of idiots, it's the queer community that should settle, that we should once again be the one who need to shut up and put up. It can be both good and terrible at the same time and it is. So first thing, the wedding in itself is absolutely a good thing for representation in general, if you take it outside the context of the show in which it exists, it does not mean however that it is well done or done with sensitivity. If I think something needs context, I'll write it in the notes.Edit : ok, my rant is about the title of the post not the following message, it got misplaced somehow as an answer to the latter. Huge range of stuff, most (if not all) are Lance-centric because I love him.
